Debunking Common Breast Implant Myths

You’ve probably heard about the popular Discovery Channel show called MythBusters. Maybe you have even seen an episode or two. Dr. Abhay Gupta was inspired by the concept of the show to publish his own version of MythBusters: Breast Implant Edition. Here, he debunks the most common myths about saline and silicone breast implants.

All Implants Look Oversized and Fake

The idea that breast implants are all huge is a myth. Implants come in many different sizes to create various outcomes. The truth is, currently more breast augmentation patients are leaning toward modestly sized implants for a more natural result, but large implants are still available for women that want them. Implants also come in different shapes, including teardrop-shaped implants that have greater projection on the bottom and are gently sloped to mimic the curve of a natural breast.

Silicone Implants Aren’t Safe

Silicone implants are very safe; in fact, they are among the most tested and studied medical devices of all time. The implants Dr. Gupta uses have gone through extensive testing for safety and effectiveness and are cleared by the FDA. They have a great safety record.

Implants Can Restore Perky Breast Appearance after Nursing

Implants are usually not enough to restore a perky breast shape after pregnancy and nursing. Placing an implant in a sagging breast can actually accentuate the sagging; adding more mass can cause the breasts to droop even lower below the inframammary fold and pull the nipples downward. The better solution to achieve perkier breasts is breast lift, which can be combined with the placement of implants to increase volume as well.

Implants Last Forever

Implants need to be replaced if they develop a complication (e.g., rupture, leak, tear) or if the patient wants to modify the size or shape of her implants. There isn’t a medical reason to remove implants that are intact, but most women eventually replace their implants at some point. Breast revision patients have the option of replacing implants with the same or different size or shape, or removing the implants altogether.

Results Appear Immediately

Breast augmentation patients usually have swelling and bruising immediately after surgery. It takes several weeks for these symptoms to resolve and for the breasts to settle into their final position. Patience is key!
