Trends in Plastic Surgery, According to ASPS

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons, recently released their 2015 annual report on plastic surgery. The data shows that interest in plastic surgery continues to grow, but the procedures patients are choosing are changing. Since Dr. Abhay Gupta is a member of this prestigious organization, he thought his patients would be interested in the report’s findings.

More People Seeking Plastic Surgery

According to the data ASPS collected, more people than ever are pursuing cosmetic enhancement through surgical and non-surgical treatment. Last year, there were 15.9 million surgical and non-surgical procedures performed (accounting for a 2 percent increase over 2014). This is a 115 percent increase since the start of the new millennium.

Most Popular Surgical Procedures of 2015

Last year, more than 1.7 million cosmetic procedures were performed. The five most popular procedures were:

  1. Breast augmentation (279,143 procedures performed)
  2. Liposuction (222,051 procedures performed)
  3. Nose reshaping (217,979 procedures performed)
  4. Eyelid surgery (203,934 procedures performed)
  5. Tummy tuck (127,967 procedures performed)
  6. Most Popular Non-Surgical Procedures of 2015

More than 14 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in 2015. The top five were:

  1. Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) (6.7 million procedures performed)
  2. Fillers (2.4 million procedures performed)
  3. Chemical peel (1.3 million procedures performed)
  4. Laser hair removal (1.1 million procedures performed)
  5. Microdermabrasion (800,340 procedures performed)

Other Notable Findings

ASPS found that the number of buttock procedures performed continues to rise nationwide. Buttock augmentation with fat grafting was up 28 percent from 2014, and buttock lift and buttock implants were both up 26 percent.

Another interesting discovery is that men now make up more than 40 percent of breast reduction patients. More than 27,000 men opted for breast reduction surgery in 2015, a 5 percent increase over the previous year. Overall, male breast reduction procedures have increased 35 percent since 2000.

Breast reconstruction awareness seems to be on the rise, too. In what would appear to be a response to the ASPS’s Breast Reconstruction Awareness Campaign, there was a 4 percent increase in breast reconstruction procedures performed. Since 2000, the number of reconstruction procedures has risen 35 percent.
