When administered by a trained, experienced injector, products like Botox and dermal fillers provide noticeable anti-aging results. It is important to realize that these results are temporary. Over time, the body metabolizes the products and the effects start to diminish. For this reason, it is important that injectable patients schedule repeat treatments to maintain the effects of treatment.
In this month’s newsletter, Dr. Abhay Gupta explains how often his patients should plan to schedule repeat treatment for Botox and dermal fillers.
Botox is designed to minimize dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that form from repeated facial expressions (e.g., frowning, squinting). Small amounts of the product are injected into specific facial muscles, temporarily relaxing them. As a result, the overlying wrinkle smoothes and the area looks softer and more youthful.
Botox results usually last between three and six months. Everyone metabolizes the product differently. The product may wear off quickly or more slowly, depending on factors such as how large or strong the facial muscles are. Gradually, the relaxed muscles start to move and recreate the same facial expressions that cause wrinkles.
How often you schedule Botox depends on how your body responds to the product and your particular area(s) of concern. You may feel comfortable waiting until the Botox has completely worn off, or you may prefer to schedule repeat treatment as soon as you start to see faint wrinkles cropping up again.
Dermal fillers serve a different purpose and work differently than Botox. They are generally used to add volume to areas of the face that have lost fullness or started to crease due to the aging process. Fillers can also plump up certain features that are naturally thin, such as the lips or cheeks.
Restylane and Juvederm products typically last a bit longer than Botox: about four to six months. Other fillers, such as Perlane, are thicker and can last six to nine months. Radiesse can last nine months to two years.
As we mentioned with Botox, everyone responds to filler products differently and some metabolize the product more quickly than others. Also, how often you schedule repeat filler treatments depends on your personal preference.
Note that Botox and fillers can appear to become longer-lasting over time. With regular treatments, you might find that you can go longer in between appointments.
