As skin ages, the tissues responsible for a youthful appearance, including fat tissue, start to break down and get reabsorbed. As the fatty tissue decreases, there is less volume support for the overlying skin, resulting in facial wrinkles, sagging, and hollows. Fat grafting is a cosmetic procedure that many San Diego patients undergo to help smooth out and restore volume to areas of the face and body that have lost their youthful appearance.
Micro-fat grafting works in a very similar manner to other injectable fillers, but since it is your own tissue, there is no chance of rejection or allergic reaction and it typically lasts much longer. This procedure uses the patient’s own fat cells, which are suctioned out of one location and then grafted to a different area by injecting them into the deep tissues. Transferring fat from one area of the body to and grafting it to another has been done for many years but with inconsistent success. In the past few years, advancements have been made in fat grafting, or fat transfer, techniques. Namely, there have been advancements in fat purification methods, making it easier and more effective to remove fat cells from one area of the body and re-inject them into another area of the body that requires enhancement.
Fat grafting at Gupta Plastic Surgery is now a viable option for suitable candidates in San Diego who would like:
In the face, fat transfer provides an excellent filler material for treatment of the lips, nasolabial folds, cheeks, frown lines and crow’s feet. Larger volumes of fat can also be used to augment and enhance the buttocks, calves and breasts. The transferred fat is usually taken from the abdomen, thighs or back with a small liposuction cannula.
It is normal for the body to reabsorb some of the grafted fat tissue, but usually a significant portion is retained over the long term. The best, long-lasting cosmetic result may require multiple sessions of fat injections. Fat grafting can be performed alone or in conjunction with other surgical procedures.
Dr. Gupta performs fat transfer grafting under local anesthesia in his office. The entire procedure usually takes only one hour. Excess fat is first removed from the abdomen, flanks or thighs, then carefully prepared to remove excess fluid and purify the fat cells to be transferred. This preparation process is also safe for the stem cells taken with the fat cells. Dr. Gupta then takes the purified fat and injects it into the desired locations with a small cannula.
Fat grafting is a revolutionary facial cosmetic procedure that can restore volume to the face features, and restore your youthful appearance. To learn more, or to schedule a free consultation, call (858) 408-6100 today.
