FAQ

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or GLP-1 RAs. It mimics the GLP-1 hormone, released in the gut in response to eating.

One role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood sugar (glucose). For that reason, health care providers have used semaglutide for more than 15 years to treat Type 2 diabetes.

But GLP-1 also interacts with the parts of the brain that suppress your appetite and signal you to feel full. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it can cause significant weight loss — and a reduced risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease — in people who are obese or overweight.

Why use Semaglutide medication for weight loss?

Here are some reasons why semaglutide may be used for weight loss:

  • Appetite Suppression: semaglutide appears to reduce appetite, leading to decreased food intake. This effect can contribute to weight loss, as individuals consume fewer calories.

  • Improved Insulin Sensitivity: By improving insulin sensitivity, semaglutide may help the body utilize glucose more effectively. This can have positive effects on metabolism and contribute to weight loss.

  • Slowed Gastric Emptying: semaglutide slows down the rate at which the stomach empties, leading to a feeling of fullness for a longer period. This can help individuals eat smaller portions and reduce overall calorie intake.

  • Caloric Expenditure: Some research suggests that semaglutide may increase energy expenditure, potentially contributing to weight loss.

Is there a required BMI to qualify for semaglutide medication?

The minimum BMI to qualify for semaglutide treatment is 25 or higher.

How do I know if I am eligible for semaglutide?

During your in initial in-office consultation with Dr. Gupta, you will thoroughly review all medical information and discuss your eligibility for a personalized semaglutide treatment plan.

How long will I need to stay on medication?

The duration for which individuals stay on semaglutide can vary based on individual factors, including the person's response to the medication, their weight management goals, and their overall health. Typically, Dr. Gupta will assess the progress of each patient periodically and make decisions about continuing or discontinuing the medication based on individual response.

How much weight can I expect to lose?

Studies show that individuals on weekly GLP-1 injections on average (semaglutide and tirzepatide study numbers) lose 12-15% body weight after one year at the full-dose. Individual results do vary, and concurrent lifestyle modifications can have a big impact. Studies also indicate that a mere 5% reduction in weight can significantly enhance conditions such as hypertension, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular diseases, PCOS, osteoarthritis, and more.
